Harare, (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) is concerned about the increase in human-crocodile conflicts since the onset of the rains, with more than eight people killed and three seriously injured in the past two months.

Recent reports indicate a significant increase in encounters, with the authority receiving over twenty reports in the last two months. ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said the human-crocodile conflict is a growing concern.

“The increase in crocodile conflicts during this season is alarming. We urge the public to exercise extreme caution around water bodies and remain vigilant while engaging in domestic activities near these areas,” he said.

The conflicts have been most prevalent in specific regions, notably South East Lowveld where six incidents were reported (Lundi, Tokwe Mukosi, Lake Mutirikwi), Central Region where five incidents reported (Munyati River, Kwekwe River, Sebakwe River), and mid Zambezi where five incidents were reported (Lake Kariba, Hunyani River, Angwa River).

Farawo said these areas have been hotspots for crocodile activity, with local residents increasingly facing threats, not only to their safety, but also to their livestock.

Crocodiles are known to pose significant risks to livestock, and ZimParks has emphasized the need for precaution. Farmers were advised to avoid leaving livestock unattended near rivers and lakes, as this can attract crocodiles and lead to devastating losses.

“In light of these challenges, ZimParks remains committed to fostering coexistence between humans and wildlife. “We are dedicated to ensuring safety and promoting respect for our wildlife, which is vital for the benefit of both present and future generations,” Farawo said.

He said ZimParks plans to increase awareness campaigns to educate the public on how to minimize risks and avoid conflicts with the formidable reptiles.
