The Zimbabwe national water authority under their social responsibility program handed over stem textbooks with an estimate value of US$4 074 to Guweh secondary school in Nkayi.

The Provincial Head and Catchment Manager for ZINWA Gwayi  Catchment Engineer Hassan Tobve highlighted the significance of stem subjects to rural  schools that seeks to improve education students uptake.

“Today’s event is quite momentous and historic for both ZINWA and the school as it marks the beginning of our diverse interventions in the education space as this is part of ZINWA’s intervention to help improve learning of STEM subjects in rural schools”.

“We hold strong belief that we exist and can only effectively deliver on our mandate when we have the support and social license to operate from the very communities in which we operate. It is for this reason we have a tailor made and customized policy that emphasize on ploughing back to communities for their upliftment”.

“Our work is reliant on STEM careers such as civil engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, hydrologists, hydro-geologists, water quality technicians, water quality scientists and civil engineering technicians. In providing STEM support to schools in rural areas, we strongly hold the hope and believe that these schools shall produce the future skills and manpower to propel the water sector forward”.

Guided by sustainable development goals, the water authority’s policy actively contintributes to social and economic development for communities. Viewing contemporary business trends where success is no longer the function of financial performance alone.

He also stressed his worries about the low participation of girls in STEM and challenged other corporate firms and individuals to participate towards ploughing to marginalized communities.

“Participation of girls remain disproportionally low in STEM with women graduating with STEM being as low as 25%. We believe that interventions such as this one, coupled with the addressing of gendered biases and attitudes to STEM, can go a very long way in reducing and eventually eliminating barriers to girls’ participation in this space”.

“I wish to also take this opportunity to appeal to other corporate actors and individuals to emulate this gesture that we have done today. When we do things together, our individual small efforts will help us achieve what starts as insurmountable”, said Eng Tobve.

ZINWA places focus on seven sustainable development goals which include no poverty, zero hunger, quality education, partnership, climate action, clean water and sanitation, good health and well-being.

Matabeleland North provincial education director Mr Mpofu emphasized the importance of sustainable development to learners.

“Lets us recognize thus moment as a significant step towards a brighter future not only for Guweh but for Nkayi and the province. We are here to develop you by equipping you learners with knowledge and encouraging that you do your own projects”.

“The field of stem has become very crucial and they are are a backbone of innovation for growth. By equipping our own learners with knowledge we are thus preparing them to tackle the challenges of tomorrow as stem education fosters critical thinking, problem solving and creativity”, said Mr Mpofu.

The timely gesture comes at a time when the country is pursuing vision 2030 which seeks to transform Zimbabwe into an upper middle income society through enhancing an innovation led and knowledge driven economy.
