Harare (New Ziana)-The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) is rolling out bulk prepaid water meters for local authorities, businesses, schools, government departments, parastatals and mines in a development meant to ensure they pay for the commodity.

In a statement, ZINWA said only critical Government institutions such as hospitals and security establishments will remain on the postpaid metering system.

“This move will help to curb the further growth of the ZINWA debtors’ book, which stands at ZWG 464,187,774.28 as of August 31, 2024, since the clients will now be paying for their water in advance.

“As of August 31, 2024, local authorities accounted for ZWG 23, 305, 415. 23 in unpaid bills while Government ministries and departments were responsible for ZWG 264, 475, 126. 50. Businesses owed ZWG 7 716 690.13 with schools accounting for ZWG 6, 707, 106. 18. Industry owed ZWG 4 098 031. 35,” said Marjorie Munyonga, ZINWA head of corporate communications and marketing.

ZINWA said the roll out of prepaid water meters is in response to requests from some of the consumers.

Bulk prepaid water meters have been installed for Beitbridge Municipality following their request to be migrated to the prepaid metering system.

The authority said to date, it has installed over 31 000 prepaid water meters, largely for domestic clients in Nyanga, Mutoko, Chivhu, Mvurwi, Murambinda, Gokwe, Guruve, Filabusi, Karoi and Hwange.

Prepaid water meters were rolled out following the successful piloting of the concept in Mvurwi and Chivhu since 2019.

The Authority said it has also put in place stop order facilities for irrigating farmers, who owe the Authority a total of ZWG 89,527,679.41.
