Bulawayo, (New Ziana)-The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) on Tuesday conducted a military parade in honour of the late national hero, Colonel (Retired) Tshinga Dube, who will be laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre on Wednesday.

ZNA Chief of Staff Administration, Major General Emmanuel Matatu presided over the parade, held at Imbizo Barracks on the outskirts of Bulawayo.

The family of the late national hero was also present to witness the proceedings. A military parade serves as a tribute from soldiers to their departed comrades, and Colonel Dube, who was a respected member of the military establishment before his retirement, was honoured in this traditional manner. The late Col Dube passed away at Matadei Hospital on Thursday evening due to kidney failure.

“I am indeed very humbled to stand here before you to officiate at this parade and pay our last mutual respects to a man who has been superior to me in rank throughout his service,” said Matatu.

“He was a man who was very close to most of us, a man we shared many moments with, and a man who was well respected by all.”

Matatu recounted Colonel Dube’s significant contributions to the liberation of Zimbabwe through his hard work and dedication.

“After completing his secondary education, he briefly worked as a teacher and became involved in politics at a young age by joining liberation parties in the 1960s.

He later took up employment as a sales representative in Zambia, where he also earned a diploma in radio electronics,” he said.

Col Dube joined the Zimbabwe People’s National Army, the armed wing of ZAPU, in Zambia. In 1964, he was nominated for military training in the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, specializing in communications.

By 1966, he had become an instructor in that field and was deployed as a reconnaissance officer in western Zimbabwe, where he played a crucial role in organizing the population for the liberation struggle.

“He was pivotal in establishing military communication within the liberation movement and played a key role in acquiring materials for ZIPRA and facilitating arms from countries that supported Zimbabwe’s struggle,” Maj Gen Matatu noted.

“He also worked closely with notable combatants like Cain Matema and Joshua Mpofu, running joint communication departments with comrades from the ANC’s Umkhonto we Sizwe,” said Maj Gen Matatu.

Maj Gen Matatu highlighted that the late Col Dube was attested into the ZNA in 1980, becoming a commissioned Colonel. “In 1989, he was appointed Commander of Zimbabwe Signals, a position he held until his retirement that same year. Following his military career, he ventured into politics, rising to the Politburo and holding several government appointments,” he said.

He said Col Dube was one of the pioneer freedom fighters of the war of liberation and a founding member of the Zimbabwe National Army, working diligently to establish and guide it through its formative years, ensuring it became an efficient force that passed the test of war in both Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Maj Gen Matatu also noted Col Dube’s pivotal role in capacitating the SADC Allied Forces during Operations Togo and Legitimacy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1998 to 2002. Describing Col Dube as a multi-talented officer who was respected by all his subordinates, Matatu concluded, “He will be remembered for his immense contributions to the establishment of the Army, particularly in the field of signals and his leadership during the early years of the institution.” The late Col Dube is survived by his wife, Nomatemba, several children, and grandchildren.
