Harare, (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Tuesday released the names of five of the seven artisanal miners who tragically lost their lives when a mine shaft at Botha Mine in Bindura, Mashonaland Central province collapsed at the weekend.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and raised urgent concerns about the safety of illegal mining operations in the region.
The victims, identified by their next of kin, include Leo Chapondama, a male adult from Maganyani village, Masembura, Bindura, Zolani Nyani (21), a male adult residing on Church Road, Chipadze, Bindura, Samson Madyira (20), a male adult from Waerera Village, Masembura, Bindura Others include Jacob Madyira Nongwe (34), also from Waerera Village, Masembura, Bindura and Mathew Madyira (23), another male adult from Waerera Village, Masembura, Bindura Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the identities of the remaining two victims have yet to be confirmed as their next of kin have not come forward.
He emphasized the dangers associated with illegal mining activities, especially during the rainy season.
“We urge the public to refrain from conducting mining operations at illegal shafts and disused mine sites. The incessant rains have made the ground unstable, increasing the risk of collapses and other hazards,” he warned.
The incident at Botha Mine underscores the ongoing challenges faced by artisanal miners, who often operate in perilous conditions due to a lack of regulation and oversight.
Many miners are drawn to these sites in search of economic opportunities, but the risks are significant, and tragedies like this highlight the urgent need for safer practices within the sector.
