Harare resumes water treatment

Harare(New Ziana)-The City of Harare said on Tuesday it has resumed water treatment after it secured chemicals sufficient to treat the commodity for the next seven days.

The local authority shut down its biggest treatment plant Morton Jaffrey on Monday, citing lack of chemicals needed to make the precious liquid potable, a development that saw the whole city going for over 24 hours without running water.

Acting mayor Enock Mupamawonde told the media that some suburbs are expected to start receiving water by midnight.

“Harare City Council has found contingent supplies of chemicals to resume water productions three hours from now. The suppliers of the chemicals have been paid. The other quantities are coming from Bulawayo and are expected to arrive this evening,” he said.

“Pumping to residents will be progressive from one area to another. Western suburbs will begin to receive water 8 hours from production start while the CBD and Mbare, Highfield/ Sunningdale will access water after 12 hours,” he added.

Mupamawonde said the chemicals would only last one week, during which period other quantities would be secured.

“We are currently engaging all stakeholders that include Government to find lasting solutions,” he said.

Last week, the government gave the city council ZWL$37.4 million to deal with the water challenges in the capital, but the council said the intervention was akin to a drop in the ocean as much more was required to fully address the issue.

“The release and disbursements from Treasury have nothing to do with chemicals but some other service delivery requirements,” said Mupamawonde.

The capital city has been grappling with severe water shortages which has seen some suburbs going for weeks without the precious liquid, exposing residents to serious health hazards.

On Monday Mupamawonde urged the government to declare the current water crisis in the city a national disaster to allow donors to intervene, adding investment in new water sources was the only solution to the perennial shortages.
