VP Chiwenga visits injured soldiers

Harare (New Ziana) – Vice President Constantino Chiwenga on Sunday visited soldiers injured in a shooting incident in Chivhu which claimed the life of one service man.

The soldiers were on joint Covid-19 lockdown enforcement patrol with police on Saturday when two gunmen opened fire on them, killing one soldier and injuring another.

The gunmen, who are yet to be identified, were tracked down near Gutu on Sunday and apprehended after a shoot-out with security forces.

Another soldier was injured on the leg in the second shoot out, and the gunmen succumbed to their injuries on arrival at Chivhu hospital.

The two injured soldiers, one of whom is in serious condition, are receiving treatment West End hospital in Harare.

Speaking after visiting the soldiers, VP Chiwenga – who is also Health and Child Care Minister – expressed hope the service men will pull through.

He regretted the death of one of the soldiers, but expressed satisfaction that the gunmen had been accounted for swiftly.

“It’s a pity that we lost one of the gallant soldiers of this country who was doing his job for the protection of our people and you know we are fighting this invisible enemy, Covid-19 and they were doing their duty not suspecting anything at all and we are in mourning together with his family, we are sorry about what has transpired.

“But what is good is that all the two fugitives have been accounted for,” he said.
