Biti granted $10k bail in assault case

Harare, (New Ziana) – Opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Alliance vice president, Tendai Biti was on Saturday granted $10 000 bail in a case in which he is facing verbal assault charges.

He was arrested on Friday for allegedly verbally insulting businesswoman, Tatiana Aleshina, 54, in public after the two had attended a court hearing. Police records show that after court proceedings, Biti, who was representing a colleague of Aleshina in a case of fraud, approached the complainant and insulted her.

“You Tatiana, you are stupid, very stupid, stupid, stupid idiot,” Biti is alleged to have said.

Aleshina said she felt humiliated, shocked and shaken and was hospitalised at Borrowdale Trauma Centre for treatment.

The State said the MDC vice president, who is denying the charges, had no right to behave in the manner he did.

Biti was granted bail when he appeared for a remand hearing at the Harare magistrates court on Saturday.

But he called the charges victimisation for allegedly exposing corrupt land dealings in the case.

“No amount of harassment will prevent us from fighting and exposing corruption,” he said on his Twitter account.

He returns to court on January 18, 2021.
