ED pours cold water on GNU
Bindura (New Ziana) – President Emerson Mnangagwa on Saturday poured cold water on a possible unity government, highlighting that the ruling Zanu PF party would follow constitutional provisions which mandated the holding of periodic free and fair elections.
Opposition parties and activists, fearing an embarrassing electoral loss for their preferred party led by Nelson Chamisa at the hands of Zanu PF in the 2023 elections, have begun canvassing for a postponement of the elections.
The opposition, in cahoots with their western allies, are sponsoring a fundamentally flawed narrative that the political environment was not ripe for an election.
“Our poll so far shows that 58 percent favour a political settlement between Zanu PF and MDC as opposed to an election which will produce contested results,” MDC activist Hopewell Chin’ono tweeted on Saturday.
But, addressing the closing day of the Zanu PF annual national people’s conference in Bindura, President Mnangagwa said apart from ensuring its internal democracy remained intact, Zanu PF would ensure that the national constitution was followed.
“One of the aims and objectives of the party outlined in our constitution is to create the conditions of a democratic, social and political order answerable to the people through periodic free and fair elections,” he said.
He said the internal party elections should provide impetus to a stronger party.
“Internal elections in our party must serve to strengthen the party and the right of our members to freely choose their leaders of the various structures of our party.”
President Mnangagwa, who has been endorsed as the ruling Zanu PF party’s candidate for the 2023 Presidential elections, said the party should now begin its work towards ensuring a thunderous victory in 2023.
He said the party had an edge over its competitors given its “game changing programs,” which the government continues to implement.
“The journey towards the 2023 electoral victory for Zanu PF has already begun. Let us go back to our cells, our wards, our districts, our provinces to establish definitive figures ward by ward and constituency by constituency.
“The Hebert Chitepo School of ideology must train up and produce loyal and ideologically grounded party cadres from the new members and those returning home to Zanu PF. We have an upper hand that should (see us) romp to an undisputable victory in 2023. In the 2023 harmonised elections, Zanu PF is silencing all detractors once and for all,” he said.
