Veld fires kill eight people

Harare (New Ziana)-At least eight people have died throughout the country after being burnt by veld fires during the 2021 fire season, the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has said.

The Statutory fire season runs from 31 July to 31 October every year.

EMA spokesperson Samkele Sidange said four people perished in veld fires during the same period last year.

“Unfortunately, during this Statutory fire season we lost about five lives and when we thought we were out of the fire season, we went on to lose three people from the same family,” she said.

The three boys from Seke village aged 8, 11 and 16 were burnt beyond recognition when the hut they were sleeping in caught fire last week.

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the origin and cause of the fire was not established.

Sidange said veld fire incidents had also risen by 28 percent to 3 900 from 1 178 recorded in 2020.

“The country lost over 1 million hectares of land in about 3 900 fire incidents and we actually recorded a 28 percent increase compared to the same period in 2020,” she said.
