Mutare mayor recalled for secretly working with CCC leader

Mutare (New Ziana)- City of Mutare Mayor Blessing Tandi has been recalled by MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora on allegations of nicodemously working with the recently formed Citizen Coalition for Change (CCC) president Nelson Chamisa.

Sources in the MDC-T told New Ziana that Tandi was recalled after it was discovered by the leadership that he was no longer representing the interests of the party and was now secretly working Chamisa.

“Tandi was no longer representing the interests of the party but was working with Chamisa behind the scenes. So the president (Mwonzora) decided to recall him. He could have been recalled long back but some powerful powers were protecting him,” said a source privy to the goings on in the opposition party.

Tandi confirmed his recall in a letter he posted on the social media, saying he was recalled on basis of no longer belonging to a party that never sponsored him in the 2018 general elections.

He thanked the residents and civic society groups operating in the city for their cooperation during his tenure.

“I would like to express my gratitude to Ward 14 in Mutasa South constituency for having afforded me a rare opportunity to represent them in the local authority. I don’t claim to have fulfilled all what I wanted to do but your trust in me has humbled me. Your support during this journey is greatly appreciated,” said Tandi.

Acting Town Clerk, Blessing Chafesuka has since written to Tandi informing him of the developments.

In a letter dated February 11, 2022, Chafesuka said in terms of Section 278(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, as read with Section 129(1) (k), the office of the councilor ward 14 of Mutare is now vacant.

“I wish to inform you that on February 11, 2022, I received a communiqué from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works informing Council of the decision by Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) to the effect that you were no longer a member of the same. By operation of the party`s constitution, the termination of your membership automatically means your recall from the office of the councilor.

“By the copy of this letter the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC is advised to the following procedure set out in the Section 121 of the Electoral Act,” said Chafesuka in a letter.
