Harare (New Ziana) – Government said on Tuesday it had located at least 118 Zimbabwean students who fled fighting in Ukraine and sought refuge in neighbouring countries.
Russian forces invaded Ukraine last week and government immediately dispatched officials to Poland, which borders Ukraine to coordinate the repatriation of affected Zimbabweans.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said some students had crossed into Poland, Hungary and Slovakia.
“Cabinet would like to reassure the nation that Government is taking all necessary steps to evacuate students and other nationals from Ukraine following the outbreak of war with Russia. The country’s Missions to Moscow and Berlin are facilitating the evacuation mission, ” she said in a post Cabinet briefing.
“To date, a total of 118 students have relocated to the following safer places: Romania, 28; Hungary, 15; Slovakia, 26 and Poland, 49. Government is in the process of buying tickets for the students to come back home.”
She said efforts would continue to evacuate every affected citizen to safety.
