ED says time up for corrupt municipalities

Chitungwiza (New Ziana)-President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday said time is up for corrupt and inefficient municipalities which have failed to deliver basic services like water supply.

Addressing Zanu PF party supporters in Chitungwiza , about 20km out of the capital, President Mnangagwa said people living in urban areas deserve leaders who are able to deliver basic services to them.

“Urban locations like this one are run by council; the Harare council and Chitungwiza council and many others.

“By law, councils collect rates from residents so that they use the money to deliver services like water supply, waste collection, sewer, construction of roads, municipal clinics and schools.

“But due to your ignorance, you voted for corrupt officials,” he said.

He added: “For more than 20 years now, Harare and Chitungwiza has not had municipal councils which serve residents. They have been squandering your rates. The time is up. Let us take back Chitungwiza. Let us return it into the hands of Zanu PF.

“On Saturday, vote for Zanu PF councillors in Harare and Chitungwiza who will go on to select Zanu PF Mayors . We will make sure there is reliable water supply in Chitungwiza.

He said it was time urban residents dump opposition parties who have nothing to offer except empty promises.

“Do not be hoodwinked by promises. They have nothing to offer except lies and promises. As Zanu PF, we will not let you down,” he said.

Addressing the same campaign rally, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga also urged the electorate to vote out the Opposition parties.

“On Saturday, we want you to vote out the opposition which has made our towns and cities uninhabitable with no roads and running water. We want you to vote for Zanu PF candidates so that we rebuild and clean up our cities,” he said.

Zimbabweans are scheduled to vote in by –elections on March 26 in polls to select 28 members of Parliament and over 122 local government representatives.
