Marondera (New Ziana) – Tobacco farmers in Mashonaland East on Thursday expressed optimism of good earnings this year after one of them netted a high price of $6.50 per kilogrammes at Voedsel Tobacco Contractors auctions.

The province is one of the main tobacco growing regions, which prompted Voedsel Tobacco Contractors to set up auction floors in Marondera.

Company managing director, Innocent Mahufe said Voedsel endevoured to offer services and prices that benefited both parties, particularly farmers who were the anchor of the business.

Daniel Mutsenhuri, a farmer from Nowe Mission, was ecstatic about the prices on offer at the floors, and said he expected to make a profit.

“When I produced my crop this year, I did it with all my effort to ensure that I get the best result and the best price so that next year I will be able to go back to the field.”

His sales averaged US$3.60 per kilogramme.

Another happy farmer, Revai Dzambasa of Macheke netted US$4.20 per kilogramme, a price in the top range for the crop nationally.
