Artisanal miner dies after mine collapse
Mutare (New Ziana) – An artisanal miner died after being trapped by a collapsed mine tunnel, police here have said.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Norbert Muzondo confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Tatenda Simango of Mutasa.
The miner was operating from Redwing mine under Chief Mutasa.
The deceased`s body has since been retrieved and ferried to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for post mortem.
On the fateful day, Simango is reported to have been in the company of his colleagues identified as Moreblessing Dhliwayo (22) of Machedyeke Village, Marange and Robert Raiza (18) of Mutizhe village under Chief Marange.
“Simango was illegally mining with his colleagues at Rusende Redwing under Chief Mutasa.The mining tunnel they were working gave in and collapsed trapping Simango.His colleagues tried to retrieve him but failed. They reported the matter to the police who attended the scene and assisted in retrieving the body,” said Insp Muzondo.
The deputy minister of Mines and Mining Development, Polite Kambamura is on record urging artisanal miners to follow the right procedure including registering the mines.
He said the artisanal miners should exercise due diligence in their operations to avoid loss of life as the nation seeks to achieve a US$12 billion mining industry by 2023 in which the artisanal and small scale miners are part of.
