Zvishavane (New Ziana) -A 26-year-old student from the Midlands State University Faculty of Mining was recently fined $10 000 or three months in prison for assaulting a police officer.

Tandavara Tavaziva appeared before resident magistrate Charity Tonongera facing charges of assaulting a police officer as defined in section 176 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act.

He pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay RTGS $10 000 fine or three months imprisonment. A further six months sentence was suspended on condition he doesn’t resist arrest or assault a police officer.

The State led by Hilda Sibanda said on April 2, 2022 at around 2 AM, Tavaziva was among people who were drinking beer at Downtown Night Club who were ordered by the police officers to vacate the premises since the operating time had passed.

Tavaziva became angry and punched Constable Allan Mapundu in the face, causing a deep cut above the right eye.

He was then arrested by other police officers.
