Court convicts Mubaiwa over marital fraud
Harare (New Ziana) – Harare magistrate Lazini Ncube on Wednesday convicted Mary Mubaiwa, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s estranged wife, of marriage fraud.
She was found guilty of fraudulently trying to solemnise her marriage to VP Chiwenga while he lay bedridden in India.
Ncube, in her ruling, said convincing evidence had been led in court proving Mubaiwa had violated the Marriage Act in her futile attempt to legally wed the VP.
The case, one of several she faces, contributed to the breakdown of Mubaiwa’s marriage to VP Chiwenga two years ago.
She was accused of surreptitiously arranging to wed VP Chiwenga under the Marriage Act without the express knowledge, let alone consent, of her husband.
She denied the charges, but was convicted on Wednesday due to overwhelming evidence presented in court.
Since the breakdown of her marriage to the country’s number two, Mubaiwa has fallen on hard times, with her health failing gravely, dramatically.
