National hero status for Major Gen Chanakira


Harare (New Ziana) – Major General Godfrey Chanakira (Rtd) who died last week after a short illness has been declared a national hero.

The late Major General was the permanent secretary in the office of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.

Chief secretary to the office of the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda confirmed the national hero status.

“The late Major General Godfrey Chanakira (Rtd) whose chimurenga name was comrade Garikai Musavengana who had been granted a state assisted funeral has now been declared a national hero following further consultations. Burial arrangements will be announced in due course,” he said.

In his condolence message to the Chanakira family last week, President Emerson Mnangagwa said the late Major General leaves behind an enviable history of supreme sacrifice and national commitment.

He said Major General Chanakira’s service to Zimbabwe spanned many years, starting from the time he joined the liberation struggle in 1975, followed by a professional career in the Army where he rose through the ranks from Private in 1980 to Major General in 2017, and in the Civil Service where he ended up as Permanent Secretary.

“He will be remembered for the great sacrifice he made for his beloved country alongside other war veterans, past and present, for his exemplary service in the Zimbabwe National Army and for his action-oriented leadership in the Civil Service. The decorated soldier will be surely missed by all of us for his different roles in the attainment of our country’s Independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and for being such a great patriot,” said President Mnangagwa.

Meanwhile, President Mnangagwa also conferred Provincial Hero statuses to former Finance Minister Chris Kuruneri, comrade Francis Komboni Gondo and comrade Charles Savanhu.

The President also extended a state assisted funeral status to Chief Nhlamba who died on Saturday.

“Chief Dennis Ndlovu Nhlamba of Garanyema area in Gwanda who passed away at United Bulawayo Hospitals on Saturday has been granted a state assisted funeral. Vice President Chiwenga will represent the President at the funeral of the late chief,” he said.
