Major-General Chanakira to be buried on Thursday

Harare (New Ziana) – The late Major-General Godfrey Chanakira (Rtd), who died last Friday, will be buried at the National Heroes Acre on Thursday.

President Emerson Mnangagwa will preside over the burial.

The late General was the permanent secretary in the office of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.

In his condolence message to the Chanakira family last week, President Mnangagwa said the late Major-General leaves behind an enviable history of supreme sacrifice and national commitment.

He said Major-General Chanakira’s service to Zimbabwe spanned many years, starting from the time he joined the liberation struggle in 1975, followed by a professional career in the Army where he rose through the ranks from Private in 1980 to Major General in 2017, and in the Civil Service where he ended up as Permanent Secretary.

“He will be remembered for the great sacrifice he made for his beloved country alongside other war veterans, past and present, for his exemplary service in the Zimbabwe National Army and for his action-oriented leadership in the Civil Service. The decorated soldier will be surely missed by all of us for his different roles in the attainment of our country’s Independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and for being such a great patriot,” said President Mnangagwa.
