Zanu PF Harare Province mourns Chidawu
Harare (New Ziana) – The Zanu PF Harare provincial leadership was on Tuesday convening an emergency meeting to deliberate on recommendations to the national leadership on the hero status of Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Oliver Chidawu.
The Province was likely to seek National Hero status for Chidawu, who at 29 became the youngest ever Mayor of Harare in 1984.
News of Chidawu’s death filtered through on Tuesday morning, but the cause of his death was yet to be revealed.
Addressing a press conference, Zanu PF Harare province chairman Goodwills Masimirembwa said; “As Harare Metropolitan Province we are convening an emergency Provincial Coordinating Committee meeting today to deliberate on recommendations to the national leadership.”
Masimirembwa described Chidawu as a fountain of wisdom, a tireless mobiliser for the party Zanu PF and a pillar of strength.
“We are saddened as Harare province by this sudden and untimely death. Despite his busy schedule, as a Minister, Comrade Chidawu was always available when the party required him to give guidance. We are poorer without him.”
Addressing the same briefing, Zanu PF secretary for War Veterans Affairs in the Politburo Douglas Mahiya said Chidawu was a hardworking cadre.
“It is going to be difficult for Harare to replace him. He was a hardworking guy,” he said.
Chidawu was appointed Minister for Harare Province in 2019.
He was a renowned businessman and sat on several boards including Bindura Nickel Corporation, Star Africa, Pelhams and Zimplow.
