Eleven suspected armed robbers arrested
Harare (New Ziana)-Police in the farming town of Karoi, Mashonaland West province have arrested 11 suspects in connection with the theft of US$51 000, 17.5 tons of soyabeans and various agricultural inputs.
The gang is believed to be behind the robbery of Energy Park fuel station in Karoi in December last year and a spate of other robberies that occurred in and around the farming town between April 2021 and September this year.
In a statement, police spokesperson assistant commissioner Paul Nyathi said the arrested suspects included Gift Asafu (29), Goodness Gandiwa (36), Kudakwashe Kapesa (24), Taurai Musindo (23), Tapera Zimbapeni (22), Onias Matangi (27), Evans Milanzi (24), Jimmy Dzokamushure (49), Addington Chagama (22), Jeremy Nyakujara (27), and Nicholas Samuel (22).
Another suspect, Charles Phiri is still at large.
“On 7th September, police acted on a tip off and tracked one of the suspects Gift Asafu who was linked to several cases of robbery in Karoi. Police interviewed the suspect who implicated 11 other suspects including Charles Phiri who is still at large,” he said.
“The suspects are now linked to nine robbery cases and one unlawful entry into premises and theft cases. Some of the cases include a robbery case which occurred at Energy Park service station Karoi on 28th December 2021, at around 2100hrs where they robbed the service station manager of US$51 000 and a VW-Golf at gunpoint and another robbery case where they attacked three security guards who were on duty at Brockerly farm, Karoi, before stealing agricultural inputs and 17.5 tons of soya beans all valued at US$80 000 among others. Police have since launched a man hunt on the outstanding suspect, Charles Phiri, alias Chewaz.”
