A 46-year-old Freda Rebecca Gold Mine employee escaped a prison term on Wednesday after
appearing at Bindura Magistrates court on charges of culpable homicide and driving without a
licence.
On the first count, the State led by Chipo Chinoda said that on October 5 at around 12.30pm,
Vhukani was speeding along the Harare-Mukumbura highway.

While at the 83-kilometre peg along the road, he reportedly hit Lameck Mukombwe, who was
crossing the road.

As a result, Mukombwe fell onto the tarmac and sustained a swollen right thigh, a cut on the upper
lip and complained of pain in the head.

He was rushed to Bindura General Hospital and was referred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in
Harare, where he later died.

On the second count, the court heard that Mukombwe was driving without a driver’s licence.

Passing sentence, Magistrate Shingi Mutiro, castigated him for reckless driving and advised him to
obtain a driver’s licence if he wanted to drive on the country’s roads.

Mukombwe was lucky to be slapped with a ZW$70 000 fine, which must be paid before December
15.
