A 40-year-old Muzarabani High School teacher is under arrest on allegations of raping one of his
students sometime in July this year.
He appeared at the Bindura Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Esteri Chivasa, who did not ask
him to plead. She remanded him in custody to 7 December.
According to a state, the victim is related to the teacher and is his student.
Prosecuting, Patience Chari told the court that on 6 July the complainant went to the accused
person’s residence to assist in minding his two school-going children since his wife was away
attending a funeral.
On 8 July and at around 11am the victim was at Muzarabani High School attending an agriculture
lesson when the accused tasked her to take some books to his home.
He allegedly followed her thereafter and asked her to clean up the house since she was to go with
his children to her village for a weekend.
She cleaned the house and when she finished she sat outside before she could proceed back to
school. She was waiting for the accused, who was indoors.
While sitting outside the accused person allegedly asked the victim to come inside the house to
collect her satchel so that they proceed back to school. Upon entering the house, the teacher
suddenly locked the door and drag her to his bedroom where he forcibly removed her pants and
skirt and raped her once.
The complainant screamed for help but nobody came to her rescue only to be released after the
accused had quenched his thirst.
The survivor informed her younger sister about the incident but advised her not to inform their
mother since she is mentally challenged.
On the 10 July the victim then informed Elizabeth Nyagope, a village health worker, who then told
the girl’s relatives and accompanied her to file a report at Muzarabani Police Station, leading to the
arrest of the teacher.
