GWERU – Aspiring councillor for Ward 18 Walter Makwalo donated maize meal and RTGS$50 000 for
the less privileged people in Gweru through the Mayors Cheer Fund initiative.
Makwalo handed over 100kgs of mealie meal and RTGS$50 000 to Gweru Mayor Councillor
Hamutendi Kombayi at Town House on Wednesday.
In an interview with The Times, Makwalo said that he came up with the idea to assist the less
privileged people in Gweru so that they can also enjoy the festive season.
I as a resident of Ward 18 and also a citizen of Gweru, out of love for my people having experienced
and felt their need, I have decided to hand over these donations to the Mayor so that we can give
the less privileged in our communities and I know with this donation they will feel loved and
recognized in the society, he said.
The aspiring councillor explained that the act of helping the needy in the community is not
associated with politics or as a way of campaigning, “but it is an act of love and respect for people
who lack resources and need assistance”.
There are times we should remove politics from our mindset and be figures of the people which
means we should be God fearing leaders and my donation is aimed at the less privileged people and
this act has been done in good faith, said Makwalo.
He thanked members of the Mayors Cheer Fund and the Mayor of Gweru for allowing him to
handover the donation.
Makwalo encouraged people and organizations to have an impact to change things for the better in
the communities of Gweru.
Let’s all unite and set a standard of giving to the needy and helping each other so that our nation
can rise and attain Vision 2030, he said.
