MUTARE- Police in Mutare forced Alick Macheso off the stage in the middle of his
performance in the wee hours of Saturday last week.
The sungura ace was performing live at the Pick and Save Platinum Leisure Spot in Mutare.
Sources say Macheso, who had started his performance close to midnight was forced to leave the
stage at 3 am on the pretext that the musician was making noise and a police boss who lives
close to the leisure spot could not get any sleep.
The leisure spot manageress, Stella Chipamawunga said she received a call from the police
ordering her to end to the show, as the district’s officer commanding police (Dispol) needed to
get some sleep.
“I received a call from the police ordering us to put an end to the show because the Dispol who
live close by was failing to sleep due to the noise. Before we had the chance to action, police
came over and forced Macheso off the stage,” she said.
One of the revelers at the much talked about show, Denzel Chisa, a devout fan of Macheso felt
short changed as he expected the musician to perform till 5 am.
“We paid for a full show and just when the stage was getting heated up the show was put to an
end. I feel it was rather an unfair move to those who had paid to watch Macheso perform all
night,” he said.
Police in Manicaland refused to comment on the matter.
The show stop comes a few weeks after residents in Mutare bemoaned noise pollution emanating
from night clubs, vendors and touts in residential areas.
They told Pungwe News they could barely sleep and called upon the local authority to evoke by
laws against public nuisance.
Many questions still remain unanswered as to whether the police were acting on previously
lodged complaints by residents of Mutare.
