New rank for rogue taxis

MARONDERA- The Municipality of Marondera plans to relocate pirate taxis to an open space
along First Street to decongest the Central Business District (CBD).
Finance Director John Kachingwe stated that plans are being made for the designated space to
be spruced up to meet acceptable requirements during a virtual meeting with homeowners and
other ratepayers.
He said: We are in the process of managing the way transport operators, mainly mishika-shika
go about their business. Council identified a site where they will be relocated along First Street
so that we bring a semblance of order in town.
Modalities have been put in place to ensure that the ground is evened and bays are clearly
marked. After that, we will need some regulation so that we register them. This has to be done
through the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development so that we are guided
accordingly and do not break any traffic laws.
Kachingwe further stated that council has already released funds for the exercise.
Another topical issue which was raised concerned licence fees payment modalities, to which
the finance director responded saying: Council allows business licenses payments to be made
in two instalments. That is because a few years back, the business community faced challenges
and made a request to that effect.
We are a council of the people and we want to promote business activities in our town by
allowing business people to pay half of their license fees at the beginning of the year and the
other half in July.
We allow that arrangement so that they can operate and raise money to meet their licence
fees.
