Dark week for Midlands as 14 perish in road accidents
Kwekwe (New Ziana) –It was a dark week for the Midlands province as another road accident claimed seven people on the spot on Saturday along the Kwekwe-Gokwe road.
The accident involving a cross border bus belonging to Just Raw overturned in Zhombe along the Gokwe-Kwekwe Road, brought the number of casualties to fourteen after another accident six days earlier left six people dead.
The other accident occurred on May 21 when a Honda Fit and an NP300 collided head on at the 15km peg again along the Kwekwe-Gokwe Road.
“The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 27 May 2023 at the 29-kilometre peg along Kwekwe-Gokwe Road in which 7 people were killed whilst 43 others were injured.
“A Yutong bus travelling towards Kwekwe with sixty-two passengers on board veered off the road to the right, hit trees and overturned once, before landing on its left side,” police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
One other person died on the spot while two others escaped with injuries on May 24 at around 10:30pm when the vehicle they were traveling in veered off the road along the Gokwe-Siabuwa Road in Gokwe.
Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said Moses Zivengwa (27) was driving a Nissan Atlas motor vehicle with four passengers on board.
On reaching the 19 km peg, it is alleged that the vehicle failed to pull up the hill and started reversing. The driver lost control and it veered off the road, hit a tree and threw all passengers out of the loading box.
