MUTARE-The Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme has come to the rescue of
residents in Ward 16, Federation also known as Mahalape in Chikanga
constituency, who have been battling acute water challenges for years.
The informal settlement, which came as result of mismanagement from a housing
scheme and ongoing wrangles with the local authority, has been for years a ticking
health time bomb as residents do not have access to safe water and proper
sanitation services.
As a result of the lack of clean safe water, many residents in the area do not have
toilets and use public pit toilets found at nearby churches, thereby posing a health
risk to residents.
In an interview with Pungwe News, Chikanga Constituency Zanu PF aspiring
member of parliament, Kenneth Muchina said the solar powered borehole is meant
to provide clean water, and improve sanitation and hygiene among the people in
line with the Vision 2030 as it is an important human right that contributes to
health and well-being.
“Would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude to our
hardworking and listening President Emmerson Mnangagwa for the borehole
scheme that has brought clean and safe drinking water top the community of
Federation. This area has approximately 500 households that had been denied
access to clean water as a basic right. We are still expecting four more boreholes to
come on board to address the dire water situation in the area,” said Muchina
Meanwhile the residents in Mahalape applauded the introduction of the scheme
which goes a long way in solving their water woes and averting a potential health
scare in the area.
Tamuka Masisimani, a resident of Federation for ten years said there had not been
much progress in developing the residential area in all aspects including access to
water and sanitation services making it difficult for households to have private
toilets and bathroom facilities.
“We could not have personalised toilets without access to water. This made
flushing and cleaning them a mammoth task. Now that we have a borehole facility
nearby it makes fetching clean and safe water much easier making it possible to
manage household toilets,” he said
