GWANDA – Ward 2 Councillor, Thulani Moyo, of Zanu PF was sworn in as the new mayor
for the municipality of Gwanda.
He will be deputised by Councillor Sithabiso Mpofu, also of the same party. She was also
unopposed.
Cllr Moyo won the tightly contested election after defeating Cllr Edgar T Ncube (CCC) by
one vote.
Thirteen councillors cast their ballots and Cllr Moyo garnered seven votes leaving Cllr Ncube
to pocket six.
Cllr Mpofu was nominated for the deputy mayor’s position while Cllr Wellington Nare from
Ward 4 was also nominated to go into the ring with Mpofu.
However, Cllr Nare also lost by a similar margin of six votes against seven votes.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected mayor promised to improve service delivery
and work hard for the development of Gwanda town.
“As the brand new first citizen of Gwanda and head of council, let me hasten to say that this
is not an individual victory but a collective one for all progressive and development-oriented
people of Gwanda.
“Together, we are given a new mandate to continue with the development of the town.
“I therefore pledge a collective and participatory leadership coupled with consultations and
research, swift implementation of council resolution.
“I also invite my colleagues to quickly discard their political jackets as they come to council
chambers and be geared for service delivery,” said the new Mayor.
He said that he is mindful of the enormous task ahead of councillors – that of swift service
delivery, especially on water, sewer, refuse collection and timeous response from council.
In her congratulatory speech, Gwanda Town Clerk, Priscilla Nkala, urged the mayor and his
deputy to remain focus and vigilant.
“As number one father of Gwanda, you are supposed to love all the citizens of this town and
treat all councillors with impartiality. This must be the same to the City fathers, council
workers and residents of Gwanda, at large, and meet all their needs, where you can as well
as having a listening ear.
“You must be a team player who is capable of uniting his team, especially here at chambers
because at times tempers can flare and people move in opposite directions,” said the Town
Clerk.
As part of the leadership role, the mayor is involved in advancing community and promoting
civic awareness and is the principal member and spokesperson for Council, including
representing the views of the Council and its local priorities.
