Sixteen buffalos die in Matetsi sanctuary

Harare (New Ziana) – Sixteen buffalos were found dead on Tuesday in Matetsi wildlife sanctuary, located between Hwange and Victoria Falls, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) has said.

Posting on X, Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said investigations were underway to establish the cause of deaths of the buffalos.

“I6 (Sixteen) buffaloes have been found dead in Matetsi, Hwange, vet doctors have taken samples for testing to ascertain the cause of death,” he said.

Sources have, however, attributed the death of the buffalos to suspected anthrax.

According to test results published by the Hwange District Veterinary department, in 2019, Matetsi was affected by an anthrax outbreak which left eight elephants and three buffalos dead.
