Harare, (New Ziana) The government has reaffirmed its commitment to uplifting marginalized communities through the Binga Development Initiative, a flagship program which President Emmerson Mnangagwa is championing under the guiding principle of “Leaving No One and No Place Behind.”

Speaking during a post-Cabinet media briefing on Tuesday, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Dr Jenfan Muswere, highlighted significant progress across key sectors aimed at transforming livelihoods in the district.

Central to the initiative is the ongoing construction of the Binga–Siakobvu–Karoi road which, once complete, will cut the travelling distance from Harare to Binga by an estimated 300 kilometres.

The development is expected to open up trade and tourism opportunities, while easing accessibility for communities that have long been isolated.

“Efforts to address water challenges are also bearing fruit, with 74 boreholes already drilled across the district. To ensure sustainable supply, 16 of these have been fitted with solar systems, providing clean potable water to villages and reducing the burden on women and children who often travel long distances in search of the precious resource,” said Dr Muswere.

He added that education and skills training are at the heart of the development drive, with the government expanding facilities at the Binga Industrial Training College.

Dr Muswera said additional buildings for both staff and students are under construction, laying a foundation for a stronger technical and vocational education hub in the region.

Furthermore, he said, two new Mabobolo schools are being established to improve access to education for children in remote parts of the district, adding economic empowerment initiatives are also underway, particularly in the fisheries sector.

Kapenta fishing rigs have been commissioned and distributed to local beneficiaries, enabling communities to participate meaningfully in commercial fishing on Lake Kariba and generate sustainable incomes.

In addition, 37 houses have been constructed and commissioned in Sungwale under the Disaster Recovery Program, providing relief and dignity to families affected by natural disasters.

These interventions underscore the holistic approach of the government in addressing both immediate humanitarian needs and long-term development.

Dr Muswere also announced the establishment of the Binga Community Radio Station, which will give locals a vital platform for information dissemination, cultural expression, and community engagement.

The station is expected to strengthen communication between the government, stakeholders, and the community, while promoting local languages and heritage.

“The Binga Development Initiative is testimony to government’s resolve to foster inclusive development and ensure that communities previously considered marginalized are fully integrated into the national development agenda,” said Dr Muswere.

With tangible progress across infrastructure, water, education, housing, and media, the Binga Development Initiative is gradually reshaping the socio-economic landscape of the district.

As projects advance, the community is poised to reap the benefits of improved livelihoods, enhanced connectivity, and broader participation in the country’s economic growth.
