Harare, (New Ziana) — Bush clearing has commenced on the Mt Darwin–Mukumbura (Ndoda–Hondo) Road Construction Project, marking a major milestone in the government’s ongoing drive to modernise Zimbabwe’s transport infrastructure under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2).

Posting on its National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) X handle, the Government said the clearing exercise signals the beginning of full-scale civil works, paving the way for earthworks, widening, and eventual surfacing of the remaining stretch of the road. Approximately 36 kilometres are still to be surfaced on this key route, which links Mt Darwin District in Mashonaland Central Province to the Mukumbura border post.

“Bush clearing has kicked off on the Mt Darwin–Mukumbura (Ndoda–Hondo) Road Construction Project, marking a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s infrastructure development. This initial phase sets the stage for earthworks and paving, aiming to enhance connectivity and transport efficiency in the region,” said the Government.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development said the work forms part of the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP), a nationwide initiative aimed at upgrading road networks to improve accessibility, enhance transport efficiency, and stimulate economic growth.

Officials noted that once completed, the Mt Darwin–Mukumbura road will strengthen Zimbabwe’s connectivity with neighbouring Mozambique, unlocking trade opportunities and facilitating the movement of goods and people.

Local communities and businesses are expected to benefit significantly from the improved road conditions, which will reduce travel time, lower vehicle operating costs, and boost economic activity in the region.

The project underscores the government’s commitment to accelerating infrastructure development as a key pillar of national transformation, in line with Vision 2030, which aims to achieve an upper-middle-income economy within the next five years.

Work on the road is set to intensify in the coming weeks as contractors move into advanced stages of construction.
