THE Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra
Chadzamira on Friday led the provincial heads in the signing of integrity
pledges to uphold a corruption-free Zimbabwe.
The integrity pledge was coined by the National Anti-Corruption strategy
steering committee, and the signing of these pledges is expected to cascade
down to all institutions and individuals.
“Today’s commemorations will see the signing of integrity pledges by some
senior officials. These pledges are an undertaking by the signatories to value
and uphold the ethos of integrity for a corruption-free Zimbabwe. We have
taken the top to bottom approach in the signing of these pledges and they will
later be rolled out to every institution and every individual,” said the Zimbabwe
Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) deputy chairperson, Kuziva Murapa.
Masvingo becomes the first province to witness senior Government officials
take the oath of integrity in order to put an end to corruption.
“I believe that corruption is one of the biggest impediments to economic growth
and prosperity in Zimbabwe and has been eroding the moral fibre of this
society. As a patriotic Zimbabwean who genuinely believes in the growth,
prosperity, inclusive development of my country and in promoting good
governance, buttressed by transparency accountability, integrity and the rule of
law.
I acknowledge my responsibility to lead by example in the fight against
corruption and to ethically render my services with integrity,” reads part of the
document.
Meanwhile, Chadzamira in his keynote address said Government would
continue to be dedicated to doing everything within its power to support the
efforts of all institutions, public and private to eradicate the plague of
corruption.
“Today is a reminder that we also have an important role to play in the fight
against corruption. I urge everyone who comes across any incident of
corruption, whether small or big, to quickly report to responsible authorities. It
is through these reports and whistleblowing that corruption can be managed.
In order to be successful in this agenda, as this year’s theme recommends, I call
upon unity among these institutions. It is through this unity that Zimbabwe will
effectively fight against all forms of corruption and economic crimes,” he said.
He said the Government officials, civil servants, law enforcement officers,
media representatives, the private sector, civil society, academia, the public and
the youth all have a role to play in uniting the world against corruption.
“To be able to fight corruption in our country, a number of institutions are
tasked to fight corruption. I understand ZACC was established as the lead
institution in the fight against corruption. The National Prosecuting Authority
was also established to prosecute corruption cases. There is also the special anti-
corruption unit housed in the Office of the President and Cabinet, which works
closely with ZACC and the NPA.”
