Bulawayo, Zimbabwe – Johnson Siamachira, Features and Supplements Editor at New Ziana, emerged as a leading health journalist at the recent inaugural Cimas @80 Media Awards held at the Cresta Churchill Hotel, Bulawayo.

The awards attracted an overwhelming 120 entries across four categories, recognising exceptional storytelling in health journalism.

Siamachira scooped a total of $5,250 in prize money for his outstanding contributions across all four key categories—Health and Wellness, Healthcare Transformation, Medical Innovation, and Public Health Awareness.

His award-winning reports spanned critical issues including telemedicine expansion, malaria resurgence, and maternal health challenges like obstetric fistula.

Reflecting on his success, Siamachira said, “These awards motivate us to continue telling the real stories that impact Zimbabwean lives. Health journalism is key to raising awareness and holding stakeholders accountable. I am honoured to contribute to this vital conversation and hope my work inspires change.”

Also recognised was fellow journalist Thabisani Dube from New Ziana, who walked away with a consolation prize of $200 for her contributions in the Health and Wellness category.

Commenting on her win, Dube said, “I am humbled to receive this recognition. It encourages me to keep highlighting important health issues affecting our communities and to contribute meaningfully to public awareness through journalism.”

The awards ceremony, which coincided with Cimas Health Group’s 80th-anniversary celebrations, brought together leading media professionals, health experts, and policymakers.

Cimas CEO Vulindlela Ndlovu emphasised the critical role journalists play in healthcare: “We count on media to be a bridge between healthcare and the people. Together, we can make health a right for all Zimbabweans, not a privilege.”

The inaugural Cimas @80 Media Awards marks a significant milestone for health storytelling in Zimbabwe, encouraging journalism that positively impacts healthcare policy and community well-being.

Johnson Siamachira’s recognition sets a high standard for health reporting, underscoring the power of media in advancing public health.
