Bulawayo, (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe government has purchased the four star Monomotapa Crowne Plaza Hotel located in the Harare Central Business District to accommodate Members of Parliament when they are away from their constituencies attending the business of the National Assembly and Senate.
In 2011, the government bought the then two star Quality International hotel to accommodate legislators but it left it idle for years until it converted to government offices almost a decade later.
Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Prof Mthuli Ncube told legislators at the ongoing 2026 pre-budget seminar being held in Bulawayo that buying the hotel reduces expenses that the government is incurring through private bookings for Members of Parliament.
“The Government has acquired the Monomotapa Hotel to provide accommodation for Members of Parliament. This strategic move is aimed at ensuring the comfort and convenience of legislators during Parliamentary sessions and national events, while also reducing accommodation costs previously incurred through private bookings,” he said.
He said the acquisition also reflects the commitment of the government to improve the welfare of Parliamentarians and enhancing institutional efficiency in the execution of legislative duties.
Previously legislators have been ejected from hotels owing to failure by the government to settle accommodation bills.
The Crowne Plaza Monomotapa Hotel was on the market for US$18 million and it was reported that hospitality group, African Sun Limited had agreed to sell it and its adjacent car park to the Public Service Pension Fund.
