Harare, (New Ziana) – The reconstruction of a key section of the Plumtree-Maitengwe Road in Matabeleland South is in full swing, unlocking opportunities for increased trade, and better connectivity to neighbouring Botswana.
Local contractor, Enock Construction Company, is working on a 10-kilometre stretch of the road, which forms part of the 92km highway linking Zimbabwe to Botswana through the busy Maitengwe Border Post. Construction has already commenced, with completion expected within the next six months.
Government says the project will significantly improve connectivity, ease congestion at the border and enhance the movement of goods and people between the two neighbouring countries with the upgraded road also anticipated to boost local commerce by improving access to markets and services.
Beyond strengthening regional trade, the Government says the development has already brought tangible benefits to communities along the route as job opportunities created by the project are helping reduce poverty and empower local households.
Government has reiterated that the road upgrade underscores its commitment to inclusive development and addresses long-standing regional disparities.
Despite the economic challenges posed by sanctions, authorities have committed to pushing ahead with transformative infrastructure programmes nationwide.
The initiative falls under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme, which is focused on modernising national and district road networks.
Stakeholders believe completion of the Plumtree-Maitengwe Road project will support greater economic activity in Matabeleland South, while improving access to healthcare, education and other essential services for surrounding communities.
