GWERU emerged the overall winners after dominating in most of the disciplines at the National
Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) Midlands Region End of year Sports Gala held at Raylton Recreation
    Club in Gweru last Saturday.

Competing for honours on the sporting arena were Beitbridge, Rutenga, Chiredzi, Triangle,
    Masvingo, Kwekwe, and Gweru.

Gweru netballers ushered the hosts on to the winning path after romping to victory ahead of
Triangle, Rutenga and Beitbridge to lift the trophy. In darts it was a two-horse race between
Masvingo and Gweru, with the latter emerging victorious.

Triangle made short work of the hosts in the penultimate soccer match – trouncing Gweru 5-0 to bag
maximum points to be crowned soccer champions ahead of Rutenga and Beitbridge.

The acting Midlands Area Manager James Gotora presented the trophies. He applauded the teams
for displaying a high degree of competitiveness and discipline.

Speaking at the games, the Midlands Area Sports Council chairman Oscar Mapfumo said bringing
together railway men and women to interact in a sporting environment was necessary as it helped
    them to rejuvenate the mind.

‘’As the old adage says, ‘all work and no play makes Jack but a dull boy’ these games take
railwaymen and women away from their normal day to day duties thereby giving them a break from
    work related pressure.

“By the time they go back to their respective work places their minds will be refreshed and physically
they will be healthier. It’s a win –win situation for both the employer and employee,” he said.
