Harare, (New Ziana) — Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo is undergoing sweeping modernization programme designed to boost passenger traffic, strengthen regional connectivity, and position the facility as a competitive international aviation hub.
Posting on the official National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) X handle, the Government said the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) is spearheading the multi-million-dollar upgrades, which are expected to transform the airport’s infrastructure and services in line with international aviation standards.
Key highlights of the upgrade include the extension of the runway from 2.5 kilometres to 4.5 kilometres, enabling the airport to handle wide-bodied aircraft such as Boeing 777s and Airbus A350s. This development is expected to increase the airport’s capacity for long-haul international flights.
The terminal building is also receiving a full facelift to improve passenger comfort, security, and flow, while a new cargo village is being constructed. The village will feature specialised facilities for handling perishable goods such as vegetables, meat, and fish — a move set to boost Bulawayo’s export competitiveness.
Other major works underway include the establishment of an uplift catering facility to allow airlines to source meals locally, an upgrade of the airport’s fire station to strengthen emergency preparedness, and the refurbishment of the air traffic control tower to improve visibility and accommodate future expansion.
To safeguard infrastructure, the airport will have a new storm water drainage system, while a 5-megawatt solar plant will be installed to ensure reliable and sustainable power supply.
According to the post, the extensive upgrade programme will not only enhance airline operations but also support local businesses through improved cargo handling and logistics.
“The transformation of Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport is in line with government’s Vision 2030 of modernising national infrastructure and driving economic growth,” said the post.
The project is widely expected to reinforce Zimbabwe’s aviation industry, open new trade opportunities, and put Bulawayo on the map as a regional transport and economic hub.
