Harare, (New Ziana) – Matabeleland South province will host the 46th National Independence Day and Children’s Party Celebrations next year at the Maphisa Open Space in Matobo district, a location chosen for both its historic significance and transformative potential.

The move marks a strategic continuation of the rotational hosting model, which saw the 45th Independence Day commemorated in Gokwe, Midlands province, a model designed to promote national unity and to spur targeted infrastructural development in every corner of the country.

Speaking at a post-Cabinet media briefing on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Jenfan Muswere, said the government had approved the venue for the 2026 celebrations and taken stock of legacy projects associated with previous hosts.

“The selection of Matabeleland South is not only symbolic, but strategic. Maphisa carries deep historical resonance in Zimbabwe’s liberation history. The event will drive inclusive development through significant infrastructure investments in the province,” he said.

According to Cabinet resolutions, a US$32.5 million budget has been approved to complete ongoing legacy projects in the Midlands province, which hosted the commemorations this year.

The projects include the construction of clinics, bridges, schools, roads, and other critical infrastructure meant to outlive the commemorations and bring lasting value to the host communities.

Muswere said the Maphisa event is expected to unlock economic growth opportunities through improved connectivity and service delivery in Matabeleland South through key initiatives including the rehabilitation of the Bulawayo-Maphisa and Gwanda-Maphisa roads, as well as a strategic extension of the Bulawayo-Maphisa Road to Mpoengs at the Botswana border, aimed at strengthening regional trade links and social cohesion.

“The hosting model has proven that national celebrations can be more than symbolic, they are a tool for tangible development. These legacy projects are transforming the face of our provinces,” Muswere said.

Additionally, Cabinet noted that US$2.5 million has been set aside to complete outstanding development works in Manicaland and Mashonaland Central, both of which previously hosted the national event.

Muswere reaffirmed Government’s commitment to ensuring that all provinces benefit equitably through rotational hosting, and that each Independence Day celebration leaves a footprint of progress.

“Each province will get its turn, and with that turn, comes a permanent improvement in infrastructure and community welfare,” he said.
