Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe has received a major boost in its digital ambitions following the appointment of Information Communication Technology (ICT), Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera to the newly established Africa Artificial Intelligence (AI) Council.

The 15-member council was selected by Smart Africa, the African Union Commission (AUC), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). It comprises ICT ministers from seven African countries and eight independent members representing organisations with interests in artificial intelligence.

In an interview with New Ziana on Thursday, Mavetera said her appointment would ensure Zimbabwe’s voice is heard in shaping the ethics and standards guiding the global AI transformation. She said the role aligns with the country’s efforts to modernise the economy under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS-2).

“I am excited about this appointment as it shows that our efforts to drive the AI agenda on the continent are being recognised. It is a great honour, especially for me as an individual, because the responsibility is quite huge,” she said.

“This appointment is an opportunity for Zimbabwe to demonstrate that it is making a meaningful contribution to the AI future. It also represents a significant diplomatic and strategic breakthrough for our nation, as we are the only country selected from the Southern African region.”

Mavetera said Zimbabwe’s inclusion in the council will amplify the country’s voice in shaping Africa’s AI framework, strengthen engagement with regional and international partners, and reinforce Zimbabwe’s standing as a serious contributor to the continent’s digital transformation agenda.

“The council’s mandate is to guide Africa’s transition into an AI-driven digital economy. As members, we will adhere to ethical considerations in the adoption of AI, with a development-oriented agenda in mind,” she said.

“This platform will also provide high-level, actionable recommendations drawn from diverse national experiences. Key focus areas include infrastructure, data, investment, governance, talent development, and marketing.”

Mavetera thanked President Emmerson Mnangagwa for his guidance, which resulted in the Cabinet’s adoption of Zimbabwe’s National AI Strategy late last year.
