Harare, (New Ziana) -The government has moved to reinforce leadership and accountability in the visual arts sector with the appointment of a new National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) Board, a development expected to sharpen its strategic direction and enhance the preservation of artistic heritage.
In a statement, the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Lieutenant General (Rtd) Anselem Sanyatwe, announced the appointment of five board members to serve with effect from 1 February this year.
The board will be chaired by retired High Court Judge Justice Maphios Cheda, who has been re-appointed, alongside Ms Chelsea Sian Evans, also returning for another term while other members include Tsungirirai Hedwick Banga, Dr Tagarira Mutenga and Takasununguka Ziki.
“The appointments are a strategic step aimed at strengthening inclusive, transparent and accountable governance within one of Zimbabwe’s key cultural institutions. The board will serve a four-year term, running until 31 January 2030,” Lt Gen (Rtd) Sanyatwe said.
He said the process was carried out in strict compliance with Section 11 of the Public Entities and Corporate Governance Act, as well as the National Gallery of Zimbabwe Act, which provides the legal framework for the composition and appointment of the NGZ Board.
The move, he noted, reflects government’s broader commitment to good corporate governance and effective leadership across public entities.
The newly constituted board brings together individuals with diverse professional backgrounds and expertise, a combination the Ministry is confident will be critical in guiding the NGZ through a dynamic period for the arts and creative industries with their mandate including providing strategic oversight and ensuring that the Gallery fulfils its core functions of preserving, conserving, researching and showcasing Zimbabwean contemporary art and visual heritage.
Established as the premier visual arts institution, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe plays a central role in promoting local artists, safeguarding national collections and fostering public appreciation of visual culture.
It also serves as an educational platform for present and future generations, linking Zimbabwe’s artistic expression to both regional and global audiences.
