Harare, (New Ziana)— President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday sent a message of condolence to his Kenyan counterpart Dr William Ruto following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing the late statesman as a dedicated leader whose contributions to Kenya and Africa will be remembered for generations.

Odinga (80), died at a hospital in India on Wednesday after battling with ill health for sometime.

President Mnangagwa said he received the news of the passing of Odinga with deep shock and profound sadness, noting that the veteran politician had devoted his life to public service and the advancement of democratic governance in Kenya.

“On behalf of the government, the people of the Republic of Zimbabwe, my family and indeed my own behalf, I extend to you, Your Excellency, and the bereaved Odinga family, our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences,” President Mnangagwa said.

He hailed the late Odinga’s enduring legacy in championing national development and promoting Africa’s shared aspirations for unity and progress.

“The late former Prime Minister will be remembered for his distinguished service to the development of Kenya. We will forever cherish Mr Odinga’s commitment to our shared regional and continental developmental aspirations,” he said.

President Mnangagwa described the late Odinga as a towering figure in African politics who inspired many through his resilience, vision, and lifelong pursuit of justice and inclusive governance, adding Zimbabwe commiserated with the Kenyan people during their time of mourning.

“Please accept, Your Excellency and Dear Brother, our heartfelt sympathies and the assurances of my highest consideration,” he added.

The late Odinga, who served as Kenyan Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, was widely respected across Africa for his role in democratic reforms and his contributions to regional peace and development initiatives.
