Harare, (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday commissioned the second batch of refuse collection compactors and equipment at Geo-Pomona Waste Management (Private) Limited, saying the modernization of waste management systems is key to sustainable urban development and environmental protection.
Addressing stakeholders at the commissioning ceremony, President Mnangagwa said the investment supports the recently launched National Development Strategy 2 (NDS-2) for 2026–2030, which prioritises environmental sustainability, climate action and improved service delivery by local authorities.
He said the Government was committed to ensuring uniform service delivery, compliance with environmental standards and improved resource recovery across all municipalities, in line with the NDS-2 agenda.
“Solid-waste management facilities in all Local Authorities must now be transformed, modernised and technologically enabled,” President Mnangagwa said.
He said waste management must evolve from being a financial burden on councils into a viable economic sector that supports environmental regeneration, employment creation and green growth.
He described the Geo-Pomona project as strategically important to national development, noting that it demonstrates how innovation and partnerships can support ecological sustainability while advancing economic transformation.
“Today, we are not merely unveiling new refuse collection equipment; we are witnessing the continued growth of a project of strategic significance,” he said.
President Mnangagwa commended Geo-Pomona Waste Management for partnering Government and the City of Harare in efforts to improve environmental management and reposition the capital as a world-class city.
He said increased infrastructure development, industrial expansion and rapid urbanisation under the Second Republic have heightened the need for sustainable waste management frameworks to safeguard public health and the environment.
He emphasised that clean environments enhance Zimbabwe’s national image as an investment and tourism destination, adding that ongoing projects such as Geo-Pomona contribute to the country’s global standing.
He challenged local authorities and communities to take ownership of environmental stewardship through consistent participation in the National Clean-Up Day, observed on the first Friday of every month.
“I will be giving awards to the top performing Local Authorities in maintaining clean, safe, healthy and beautiful environments,” he said.
