Three children drown in a fish pond

MBERENGWA – In a heartbreaking incident, three children—two aged six and one aged five—tragically drowned in a backyard fish pond in Village Vengai, Chief Mataga, Mberengwa, last Saturday.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Midlands spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident and once again urged parents and guardians to supervise children closely during play to prevent such tragedies.

The deceased have been identified as Nokutenda Maidza (6), Tariroyashe Maidza (5), and Adroid Shumba (6).

The children’s bodies were discovered by Alpheos Shumba (65), floating in the fish pond at his homestead. The pond is approximately 14 metres long, 10 metres wide, and 1.5 metres deep.

Adroid Shumba, one of the deceased, was the informant’s grandson; the other two children were neighbours.

ZRP Mataga attended the scene.

“The three bodies were retrieved naked, with their clothes strewn about three metres from the pond,” said Inspector Mahoko.

The bodies were transported to Musume Mission Hospital for post-mortem examination.
“We reiterate the call for parents and guardians of children to keep a close eye on them when they play,” he said.
