Harare (New Ziana)-Covid-19 cases are beginning to rise with two people dying from the infection on Monday and 113 new cases being recorded the same day, up from 57 reported on Sunday, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said.

As of Sunday, there were 46 hospitalized Covid-19 cases, 22 of which were vaccinated while 24 were not.

    Zimbabwe has so far recorded 254 268 Covid-19 cases, 246 719 recoveries and 5 523 deaths.

Health and Child Care deputy Minister John Mangwiro last week told Parliament that the country would not dump its policy on the compulsory wearing of face masks, insisting it had its own unique approaches to combating Covid-19.

“As government, we are saying we stick to science, we want to follow science which is now there. We do not necessarily follow what is trending on television or on Facebook.

“We still believe and we also know that the virus is lethal; we cannot take it for granted,” he said.

The decline in new infections and deaths over the past months saw most citizens letting down their guard against the deadly disease as they abandoned preventive measures like wearing face masks, social distancing, hand sanitising and vaccinating.

There are fears that the complacency will result in many deaths as the virus is known to thrive during the cold season.
