Victoria Falls City Council has advised drivers to slow down in the central business district, warning that excessive speeds endanger pedestrians, buildings and local wildlife.
Victoria Falls Council has highlighted that speeding has become a major concern, contributing to numerous accidents, particularly along Livingstone Way, where vehicles have repeatedly damaged streetlight poles.
In an interview, systematic Councillor Lezina Mohamed emphasised the need to address specific issues in order to effectively deter motorists from speeding in the area.
“ZRP should have patrol cars in the CBD and hold speed traps as well; I still insist on heavy fines. It’s sad that people still speed in the CBD when the streets are already congested with cars and our vendors.
“I think ZRP should work hand in glove with the council to catch these offenders and issue heavy fines so that we as citizens learn to abide to traffic rules,” said Cllr Mohamed.
Recently a vehicle owned by Lastora Investments was involved in a harrowing incident while speeding towards the City Centre. The driver lost control after the brakes failed, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and crash into the bush opposite Cresta Sprayview, narrowly avoiding trees before stopping. Fortunately, the driver escaped unharmed.
However, concerned citizens have proposed various solutions to curb the menace of speeding, which is threatening their movement in the CBD as they go about their daily business.
A resident, Farai Chikwara said the city needs more traffic lights to help reduce speed.
“Vic Falls City needs robots at Mkohosana turn off, VID turn off, Spray view turn off, and Shearwater cafe area. I think asking for four more robots isn’t too much to help regulate traffic in our city”, said Chikwara
Another resident, Nashe Mocha blamed the increasing number of pirate taxis that have flooded the city causing confusion.
“The speeding is now becoming a norm in this city especially those mushikashikas; it’s worse during school days and they will be moving kids, something serious needs to be done honestly,” she said.
Most people suggested installing speed cameras and constructing speed humps as effective ways to combat speeding, as both can play a crucial role in addressing this widespread issue.
