Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe’s senior men’s national soccer team, the Warriors, is guaranteed to pocket US$500 000 from the Confederation of African Football (Caf) for participating in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.
Morocco will host the tournament, which kicks off on Sunday and is expected to conclude on 18 January next year.
The Warriors are expected to leave for the North African country on Tuesday and will face Egypt in their first group match on 22 December.
They will also face South Africa and Angola.
For taking part in the tournament, the Warriors will receive US$500 000, and if they finish the group stage among the third-placed teams, that sum could rise to US$700 000.
If they progress to the round of 16, they will be guaranteed to receive US$800 000. Champions of the tournament – whose record winner is Egypt with seven titles – will receive US$7 million.
When they appeared at the AFCON finals in 2021, the Warriors failed to go beyond the group stage.
