Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe on Wednesday recorded two new Covid-19 cases to take the tally of confirmed cases to 48.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care said the two cases were both returnees who are still in mandatory quarantine.

“The cases are female returnees, one from Botswana and one from South Africa who both tested positive on the eighth day of quarantine,” the ministry said.

On May 20, a total of 1 223 tests were carried out, bringing the total of tests conducted since the first case was recorded in late March to 32 862.

Government says initial estimates had indicated that Zimbabwe would have a total of 1 000 cases by the time it carries out around 33 000 tests.

Experts say the total lockdown, ordered by government since March 30, but later relaxed to allow formal workers to return to work, helped curtail the potential spread.

To date, the country has recorded four deaths and 18 recoveries.

While still emphasising social distancing in line with World Health Organisation regulations, government has made it mandatory for all citizens to cover their nose and mouth using masks or other material when in public in a bid to contain possible spread of the respiratory disease.
