Bulawayo, (New Ziana)- Acting president of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) Tapfuma Parirenyatwa has resigned, citing family commitments and personal business interests.
In a letter to the ZRU board on Thursday, Parirenyatwa said he needs to focus on developing his business as well as spend time with his family and will no longer be able to give this crucial role the attention and dedication that it requires and deserves.
Parirenyatwa was appointed as acting ZRU resident early this year following the resignation of Losson Mtongwiza.
“It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter from my position as Acting President of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union(ZRU). This is not a decision I have taken lightly, but I am aware of the level of commitment that this role requires for it to be performed effectively,” he said.
He said it had been his greatest honour to serve the country through his involvement in various capacities in rugby.
“I believe that with the Sables recent victory in Uganda and new international visibility this has brought to Zimbabwean rugby, it is the ideal time for me to step down and allow someone who can give this role the devotion it deserves to take over,” said Parirenyatwa.
He also said he will be dissolving the Zimbabwe Rugby Trust to allow the incoming president to elect a new Trust, and the current members are readily available for the relevant handover and takeover procedures.
“My resignation will be effective thirty days from the date of this letter, I stand guided by the constitution, but I suggest that after these thirty days, fresh elections for the position are called for, in which I will not stand as a candidate
Parirenyatwa`s resignation comes at a time the Sables completed an upset win over Namibia to qualify for the Rugby World Cup 2027.
