Harare, (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has hailed the appointment of its Director of International Conservation Affairs, Professor Patience Gandiwa, as the new chairperson of the African Group of Negotiators on Wildlife (AGN), a powerful continental platform driving policy and advocacy.

The African Group of Negotiators on Wildlife serves as a collective voice for African nations in key global forums such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and other multilateral environmental agreements.

The appointment of Prof Gandiwa is being celebrated as a landmark moment for Zimbabwe and Africa, symbolising the growing influence of the continent in global conservation discussions, as her new role places her at the forefront of advancing the continental wildlife agenda on the international stage.

“The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) Board Chairperson, Dr. Aggrippa G. Sora and Board, Director General, Prof. Edson Gandiwa and Directorate, Management and Staff congratulate Prof. Patience Gandiwa, ZimParks Director of International Conservation Affairs, on her appointment as Chairperson of the African Group of Negotiators on Wildlife (AGN),” said ZimParks in a statement.

It said her efforts and vision have long contributed to the advancement of sustainable wildlife management, adding that the appointment is a fitting tribute to her dedication to conservation and her ability to lead at the highest level.

As chair of the AGN, Prof Gandiwa will be responsible for steering negotiations, promoting regional unity, and shaping policies that support the protection of the continent’s rich biodiversity.

ZimParks expressed full confidence in her ability to promote greater collaboration among African states and to amplify the continent’s priorities in wildlife conservation.

“We are confident that under her leadership, the AGN will drive forward impactful and inclusive conservation policies that reflect the unique realities of Africa,” ZimParks said.

Prof Gandiwa is widely respected for her strategic vision, scientific expertise, and deep understanding of the socio-ecological systems that define conservation challenges in Africa. Her new role is expected to boost Zimbabwe’s standing in global conservation diplomacy while inspiring a new generation of African environmental leaders.

Her appointment comes at a critical time, as African nations continue to confront complex threats to wildlife, from climate change to illegal trade, requiring united, evidence-based responses.
